Day 1/2
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and also the largest city in the country. The city is located in the Ararat Plain and lies on the river Hrazdan. The city has about 1.2 million inhabitants and is the administrative, cultural and industrial center of the country. Yerevan is known for its hospitable population, it is an atmospheric city with cozy cafes, delicious restaurants and a vibrant nightlife for young people.
Genocide monument
The name of the national genocide monument of Armenia is Tsitsernakaberd. The memorial is dedicated to the 1.5 million Armenians who were murdered during the first genocide of the 20th century. It is a black page in Armenian history that has signed Armenia. In the middle of the monument there is an eternal fire and it is a busy place of remembrance for the Armenians. Near the monument there is a modern genocide museum, in which the whole story is described and depicted.
Day 3
Khor Virap
A Christian temple (66-75 BC) near the picture Garni. A particularly beautiful location on a gorge, through a nice path you arrive at the temple, which is already visible from afar. Next to the temple is also a bathhouse, with a preserved mosaic floor. Noteworthy is the Greek text: ΜΗΔΕΝ ΛΑΒΟΝΤΕΣ ΗΡΓΑΣΑΜΕΘΑ. We worked without receiving. Is it built by slaves or faithful volunteers? A lot of mystery about the Garni-temple!
Noravanq*
The ‘holy mother of God’ church was built in the 13th century. It is located near the river Amaghu, near the village of Yeghegnadzor in the province of Vayots Dzor. Several Khachkars * (an Armenian cross carved out of stone) can be seen at the churches, of which the architect (Momik) from 1308 is interesting. Nevertheless, the surroundings and views around the church are particularly beautiful with colorful mountain walls.
Jermuk
Jermuk is the area in Armenia known for its hot springs and the mineral water called ‘Jermuk’ that is sold throughout the country. Several spas and wellness centers can be found in Jermuk. The local people of Jermuk are known to love chess. International chess tournaments are held here throughout the year.
Day 4
Carahunge
Carahunge / Zorats karer, a stone circle in Sissian, is known as the Armenian Stonehenge. After Armenian and Western investigations it has been established that Carahunge is already 7500 years old. The oldest astronomical observatory that has been discovered.
Tatev*
The monastery of Tatev can be reached with the world’s longest cable car. A 9th century monastery complex on the edge of the deep ravine of the river Orotan. In addition to serving God, the complex was in the 14th and 15th centuries the most important center and the main university. Tatev is a pearl in the south of Armenia, a magical monastery in an enchanting environment
Khndzoresk
The old cave village lies against the steep mountains of Syunik province. It is known for its ancient caves that were built in the natural environment. Until the end of the 19th century Khndzoresk was the largest village in East Armenia. The caves on the mountainside have been inhabited until the 1950s, nowadays some are used as storage.
Day 5
Smbataberd
Smbataberd is a fort built in the 5th century AD. It is located on the top of a hill. The fort is built to withstand foreign invaders. Next to the fort is a monastery that was built in the same century as the fort.
Tsaghkadzor
Tsaghkadzor is a city located in central Armenia. It is known as a ski resort, forest and monastery. High forested mountains and summer cottages make the area an ideal recreation resort. Many Armenians have a summer house here or spend the holidays in apartments.
Day 6
Lettermonuments
In 2005 was the 1600-year anniversary of the Armenian alphabet. This was celebrated by opening a monument consisting of the 39 Armenian letters. These represent the Armenian alphabet that is rich in letters and made in a similar way to the Khachkars.
Saghmosavank
Saghmosavank is a thirteen century monastery in the province of Aragatsotn, near the highest mountain in Armenia; the Aragats. It has a beautiful environment from where the mountain Ararat is visible. Saghmosavanq is built on the edge of a ravine, where the Kasagh River flows. Besides the small Armenian churches, it is extra special with its size.
Mughni
Mughni is the place where the St. Gevorg (George) monastery is located. In the church it is possible to visit the tomb of Saint Gevorg. This is a well-known pilgrimage site since the monastery was founded. As an extra, the church has, in contrast to other churches, a beautiful garden.
Day 7/8
Vernissage and day off
A large open-air market in Yerevan, where you do not get bored of the best souvenirs, the most beautiful paintings and the special antiques. It is within walking distance to the center of the city, where you can relax and grab a terrace. You can fill your free time in the city with nice terraces, shopping centers or, for example, visit a specific museum.
